Last night we took the kids to test drive the Chrysler Aspen with the intent of buying it if all went well. It didn't. Craig got in and immediately declared the legroom in the second row inadequate. We initially discounted this as he was prejudiced against the car because it is a hybrid. He had already insisted that if we bought it, we remove any references to it being a hybrid that are on the vehicle. Tom and I sympathized with his opinion--we are hardly "Save the Earth" types, but there is no need to be a snob about it and it does get better gas mileage. Everything else about the test drive went well until Tom and I switched places. The front passenger's seat did not have enough legroom for him. The glove compartment interfered with his knees and some of the hybrid equipment cut into the foot space. This was sad news, because I loved the car. It had a smooth ride, comfy seats and it was fully loaded. Driving it made me feel like a rich lady.
We took it back and gave the bad news to Tyler, our salesman. He was quite surpised and disappointed. If the issue had been something other than size he would have offered us discounts, free service for life, free warranties, anything to make the sale, but none of that fixes legs that don't fit.
We took the kids to the Hyundai dealership to test drive the Veracruz. Craig was much happier. Kelly liked it. Tom fit just fine, but it was a bumpy ride by comparison. Perhaps my disappointment colored my opinion. At any rate, we are still shopping. Current contenders are the Veracruz, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and the Chevy Traverse or GMC Acadia, which are essentially the same car. I found a very nice, low mileage, loaded Pilot in our price range so we're going to check that one out next. Stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, please observe a moment of silence for my shattered dream.
